Hope For Today – Forgiving Iniquity, Rebellion, and Sin!

Messing up. Ugh! We’ve all done it and, to be honest, sometimes the biggest problem is just being discovered. Don’t misunderstand me. The worst thing is failing. But the problem is, when we have to tell someone what we did, especially when that someone is our dad.

Hope For Today – Being Slow to Anger!

Anger. Just a word evokes a multitude of different emotions in different people. If one of the first people we think of when we hear the word anger is our father, we can be sure that our lives have been repeatedly scarred.

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today about Being Slow to Anger!

(Exodus 34:6, CSB) “The Lord passed in front of [Moses] and proclaimed: The Lord—theLord …is slow to anger

Magnificent Marriage Monday – Take Seriously What God Takes Seriously!

And he said to Sarah, “Look, I am giving your brother one thousand pieces of silver. It is a verification of your honor to all who are with you. You are fully vindicated.” Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female slaves so that they could bear children, for the Lord had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household on account of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.” (Genesis 20:16–18, CSB)

For the Lord had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household on account of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. When did nonchalance become the response to God’s words? We serve a God whose name is Almighty! Let that name roll off your tongue a few times. Go ahead, say it out loud right now a few of times a few different ways. “ALL–Mighty!” “All-MIGHTY!” “ALL-MIGHTY” Can you feel it? That’s the God who designed our marriage!

All too often, we forget that God is watching and that he is acting, intervening, thwarting, and even promoting different actions and attitudes in our lives. God is alive and active in our lives for our benefit and protection, even when we are on a path of disaster and destruction of our own making.

You can see here that God was applying what is called in basketball, “a full-court press” on King Abimelech. While Abraham foolishly left his wife in the arms of the King, God wasn’t about to allow harm to come to her. This is NO WAY justifies Abraham’s stupidity born out of fear.

God’s mercy and goodness overpower even the bad decisions our spouse makes. True, we often pay the consequences for those missteps. However, God often mitigates the severity of the consequences because of His unfailing love.

As Abimelech paid a generous “offering” to Abraham for his “almost adultery” we see God’s judgment on the matter. “Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female slaves so that they could bear children, for the Lord had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household on account of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.”

God takes the sanctity of our marriage seriously. So should we!

Magnificent Marriage Monday – Valuing Our Wives As God’s Gift To Us!

Abraham replied, “I thought, ‘There is absolutely no fear of God in this place. They will kill me because of my wife.’ Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. So when God had me wander from my father’s house, I said to her: Show your loyalty to me wherever we go and say about me: ‘He’s my brother.’ ”” (Genesis 20:11–13, CSB)

“So when God had me wander from my father’s house, I said to her: Show your loyalty to me wherever we go and say about me: ‘He’s my brother.’ ” Why do some men treat their wives so poorly? Why is it that these same men choose to look at their wives as a piece of property to use and barter with to get what they want out of life?

How we treat our wives says a lot about our character. Many men have no idea the potential God has placed next to them. God has blessed them with great wisdom and insight, intelligence and shrewdness, compassion and discernment, and so much more … all in the package God calls their wife.

When Abraham “threw his wife under the bus,” so to speak, by asking her to show loyalty to me wherever we go and say about me: ‘He’s my brother,’ ”we realize that his estimation of her worth was greatly diminished compared to her actual God-given value.

Now we know that Abraham didn’t have the command we do. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25, CSB) However, treating your wife with contempt by allowing another man to possess her fully as his wife should have turned his conscience upside down!

Abraham’s fear led him to unthinkable decisions. And those decisions led to his allowing her to be violated. Had it not been for the supernatural intervention of God, King Abimelech would have taken her as his wife, thus causing Sarah to commit adultery at Abraham’s command. All this happened because of Abraham’s lack of faith. For where there is fear, there is little faith!

Today we have a choice … one we can make for a lifetime. Will we value our wives more than life itself? Will we love her and give ourselves for her, even at the cost of our lives? She’s your treasure! Once we make that decision, the rest of loving her comes so easily.
