Train Them Thursday – Is There Life?

The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.” (Luke 2:40, NASB95)

The Child continued to grow and become strong. Where faith lives, growth happens! The opposite is also true. In fact, we can diagnose our own spiritual health as a disciple of Jesus by this simple measurement: “Am I growing? How have I grown in the last month?”  Questions like these stir the soul to self-evaluate and determine our faith-health. Without growth, we shrink back and die spiritually.

Now, before we move on, be careful of the alternative, which is criticizing others. Satan loves to cause us to think we are spiritual when we look into another person’s life and find fault with them. That isn’t spiritual health. That is pride. And we, as disciples of King Jesus, are to be marked by our humility. Our own constant self-examination is evidence of that meekness.

All living things grow. All dying things die. It is THAT simple for a diagnostic. Think of the plants around your home. Life is green. Death is brown. When we go to the grocery store we can tell the condition of the fruit by their appearance. Mold, bruises, shriveling, and softness all are evidence of death.

For the true follower of Jesus, spiritual health sees us growing stronger each week, each month. We are no longer what we were but we are not yet what we will be. God intended for us to be vibrant spiritually. In fact, as we grow into our later years of life on this planet we should be able to confidently say, “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16, NASB95)

With each month our ability to make wise choices should increase. In the words of God each day we discover the examples of the Old Testament people. There we discover fools and the faith-filled. Listening, aligning, and applying are the traits of a wise disciple.

God’s grace flows on those who grow! That grace is constantly “instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,” (Titus 2:12, NASB95) Each day and in every way, God meets us when we draw near to Him and His grace-filled growth is evident to those we meet.

Willing Worker Wednesday – Boldly Speaking for God

When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to the place of his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones! Even now the ax is ready to strike the root of the trees! Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” (Matthew 3:7–10, HCSB)

Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. Serving God often means speaking truth to people that don’t want to hear it. That truth can cause us to back down or back away from the declaration. We are afraid of what people will think of us or what they might do to us.

Yet, it is God who sends us to that place to proclaim that message to that crowd. He knows what the results are going to be. He knows who will respond and who will reject the proclamation of life and hope. And truly, that’s above our pay grade. We are simply called to “go and tell” and leave the results up to the Lord.

Boldly speaking for God is a characteristic of a true servant leader of King Jesus. Those who know their Master well know that He is King of kings and Lord of lords. No one is more powerful or has the ability to command life and light like He does. We rest assured that we do not follow “a god.” We follow THE God!

And, so, we are able to stand as John did and confront those religious folk who think they are too good to humble themselves and submit to the method of God. While those we speak to may have power, we have nothing to fear. As Jesus reassured us, “Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28, HCSB) This is the real test of our servant leadership … the one we fear is the one we truly serve.

And so, today, we have a choice before us. Will we go and tell our family, friends, loved ones the message of our King? And, yes, even those religious ones who think they are too good for repentance?

Willing Worker Wednesdays are dedicated to explaining the core realities of servant leadership – the Biblical principles and methods used by God’s faithful people throughout time. They further reflect the lifestyle of Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords as He walked on this earth announcing the Kingdom of God had arrived. These brief lessons are written by Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, and come from his extensive ministry within the local church, in higher education, in church consulting and as a Biblical author and leader. Turn-Around Tuesday – God’s Timetable and Our Lifetime

Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.” (Genesis 15:13–14, ESV)

Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. Life doesn’t go well all the time. In fact, though this is hard to swallow in our candy-coated theological world, sometimes it is in God’s plan to allow His children to suffer because of His timing and purposes.

Yes, I know. No one wants to be those people, much less hear that truth. However, we can see it in our world every day. Just watching the latest videos from countries where Christianity is seen as the enemy and a threat will reveal that. Some of you are in awful situations and are reading this in the hope that God wants everyone to have a much less painful life today.

And while that may sell books and fill buildings, the truth is that has never been the reality for all the people of God at any given moment. Consider these sobering words as a testimony …

Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.” (Hebrews 11:36–38, ESV)

Sometimes God’s timetable and our lifetime are simply in sync in such a way that we will have to deal with much more bad than good. And what are we supposed to do in such circumstances? As Jesus said, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16, ESV)

No matter our current situation though, we can stand firm knowing that God is working out His plan. And, we can be sure that He will reward us abundantly in Heaven for being faithful to that plan.

Magnificent Marriage Monday – Changing Our Conditions!

But the Lord asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Can I really have a baby when I’m old?’ Is anything impossible for the Lord? At the appointed time I will come back to you, and in about a year she will have a son.” Sarah denied it. “I did not laugh,” she said, because she was afraid. But he replied, “No, you did laugh.”” (Genesis 18:13–15, CSB)

Is anything impossible for the Lord? Our problems in marriage can seem to be greater than we can ever overcome. What will we do when we need is a giant-killer but we are even afraid of mice! Should we “cut and run” or be brave (whatever that is) and stand our ground hoping for something better to soon happen.

As the wife, the helper, you can do a lot to influence and change the course of your future together. As a partner corresponding to him,” (Genesis 2:20, CSB) you have the ability to lift and turn the heart of your man toward the Almighty in those tough times. It is your encouragements that fuel His faith. As Solomon reminds us: “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10, CSB)

However, when doubt comes in, it seems to darken all hopes and dreams. Doubt eats away at the impossible, seeing only what’s possible. Doubt tells us what can be, not what should be. When faith flees, hope exits. We feel confined and consigned to deal with so much less when our belief turns to dust. Truly the “super” leaves and all we’re left with is the “natural” as our days drag into months and years without the touch of God.

Sarah struggled with the real, every day, the here and now. She didn’t have the eyes of faith to see that while she had stepped into the routine, God lives in the miraculous! While Sarah’s post-menopausal condition changed her faith, God is looking for those whose faith changes their conditions.

Are you the wife that changes the conditions of the surroundings in your marriage? Do you come to the table with a faith that knows God can and will change things? What bigger things is God leading you to trust Him for? How will your faith change your future as a couple, a family, a neighborhood, a church, and a community?

Magnificent Marriage Mondays are helpful hints, clues, ideas, and solutions for the child of God who is looking for a spouse, in a relationship with someone, or are already married. Each post seeks to bring help, hope, and honesty to your life and make the rest of your life, the best of your life. They are written by Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, and come from his 38 years, 5 months and 2 days experience with his wife, Melodee, who was promoted to Heaven on November 11, 2017. Faith Filled Friday – Will You Submit to the Will of God?

Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son. Now then, if you are going to show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.” (Genesis 24:48–49, ESV)

Now then, if you are going to show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left. When God leads us, He has an uncanny knack of leading us right to the place and to the person we need just at the moment we need them. That is what God does in response to our faith. This is how faith works.

As the servant of Abraham, now a thousand miles from home, comes into the tent of Laban, God has moved everything for this place and this moment. It was “for such a time as this” that all the dust and heat, cold nights and long days were endured.

Wrapping up his tale of his mission, this faith-filled servant speaks of worship and blessing the God who had directed him to Rebekah and the wild test that she passed without even knowing of it!

Now, like a high-stakes gambler with four aces, he goes “all-in” and calls Laban out. There, as the smells of the hot-cooked meal waft before him, there’s a question to be answered before the meal can be eaten. “Will you submit to the will of God, Laban?” Those aren’t the words he spoke but that was the question he was asking.

Laban had to choose to be faith-full or to reject the will of God for his daughter. To this unknown man, a servant no less, Laban was being asked to surrender his prize possession – his first-born daughter – to travel to a foreign land where he would never see her again! What would he do?

What would you do? If God asks you to make a choice and the evidence is overwhelming, what would be your response to Him? Even if the choice would mean a total change and a one-way trip?

Perhaps you are there today? And if you are, will you be like Laban and surrender to the plan of God for your life? Will you choose, “Yes!”?

Faith Filled Fridays hope to boost your trust in God and accelerate your daring and courage in everyday life. Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, writes each encouragement out of a heart that has known both great joy and great loss – his wife of 38 years, 5 months and 2 days was promoted to Heaven on November 11, 2017. Through every experience, God has proven Himself more than faithful and trustworthy. He welcomes your comments below.

Train Them Thursday – Let God Guide!

So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “He shall be called a Nazarene.”” (Matthew 2:21–23, NASB95)

Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. The beauty of following the Living God is that He is, well, He is alive! We don’t follow ancient teachings from a dead person. Our God lives and, even better, He communicates.

What’s even more exciting is that He knows how we feel and why we feel the way we do. He understands our emotional state because He is with us and He is in us. Unlike the followers of other faiths, we have the confidence to know that our belief is so much more than just teachings and rules. It is a dynamic relationship with a person who infinitely cares about us.

As a result, because we have chosen to surrender our lives to Jesus as our King and Lord, we have special preference in this life. We have access (See Romans 5:2) by faith to God and His grace by which we are able to stand firm, no matter what happens to us or around us.

So Joseph, this amazing man of God, fresh off the heels of a God-imposed exile to Egypt for his son, Jesus’ safety, finds as he returns to Judah that there is still danger. In fear, and what we have to believe would have been an evening of prayer, God speaks to his concerns and turns him and the family northward, to the hills of Nazareth.

Wherever God leads us, He gives us enough information to get us to the next intersection. It is at those crossroads that God allows us to consider and then request His intervention. This is where we freely pour out our fears, concerns, worries.

And, as Joseph would tell us, God steps up and steps into our moment turning our feet and our hearts. He leads us through the danger, solves our problem, and accomplishes His plan. What an amazing God we follow. Isn’t it great to be His disciple?

Willing Worker Wednesday – Go … and Speak!

John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.” (Mark 1:4–5, HCSB)

John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. “Serve where you’re planted,” was once a popular slogan in Christian circles. It meant we don’t have to look for a place far away to take the message of the Cross. We have family, friends, and neighbors who need Jesus. Go and tell them. And all of that is true.

However, remember what Jesus commanded us: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15, HCSB) Often Jesus calls us to fulfill the “Go!” part of the command. People need Jesus, everywhere! So, we are often called to places we would never imagine.

But when God called John to the wilderness, along the Jordan River, he must have at first wondered who would come to him there. How would he proclaim the message to people in the wilderness? I mean, there he was on the south side of the Sea of Galilee far from the North Shore communities of Capernaum, Chorazim, or Bethsaida. So what was he doing here?

Yet, on this central route between Jerusalem to the south and those communities to the north, God placed this bold man with a bolder message: “Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight! Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low; the crooked will become straight, the rough ways smooth, and everyone will see the salvation of God.” (Luke 3:4–6, HCSB)

As people traveled through, John preached “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” What was more amazing was, “the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him.”And in these words, we find our lesson. God moves us to where He needs us. When we arrive there God will bring those whom He has prepared.

Our task is simple: Go and speak! God will do the rest!

Turn-Around Tuesday – Impaired Faith-Vision

And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”” (Genesis 15:7–8, ESV)

“O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it.”Uncertainty is based on doubt. We cannot see what God is promising us. And why can’t we see? Our vision is impaired because we are walking in the flesh, in the natural, in the daily routines of humanity.

Even while Abraham was alone with God, being shown the enormity of God’s plan and power, he still doubted. It seems like, when we have a doubting idea lodged in our minds, even God struggles to remove it from our thinking.

If we pay attention to the context of the words written above, we hear, “And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:3–6, ESV)

Despite Abraham’s growing faith, his ability to completely see the vision God was sharing with him was limited. As is ours. You are growing. God is using you. He is planting a new heart in that soul of yours, one that believes and chooses to please Him.

However, there are times when we are not yet what we will be. And in those moments, we must admit we fail, we struggle, and we simply don’t s-t-r-e-t-c-h far enough to grasp the outrageous plan God has for our lives and our progeny.

Don’t feel bad. If Abraham couldn’t make the stretch all the time, we won’t either. Remember this truth: “Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.” (1 Corinthians 10:11, ESV)

Be encouraged that you are stretching to grasp God’s will for your life. Don’t beat yourself up because you aren’t complete yet. Take a moment and breathe in the wind of the Spirit. You’re getting there!

Turn-Around Tuesdays are designed to bring hope and help, insight and encouragement to those of us who are simply overwhelmed by the flood of problems life throws at us. No one is immune to trials and troubles, but God has a way of lifting us from life’s torrents. Each short thought is written by Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, and comes from his life-journey with the God who never leaves us or forsakes us.
